KEEPING THE CLIENT RUNNING:

• Please do not run the client in a tight while loop such as the following:
  

  $ while true
        do
  	./setiathome
        done
  

• This type of loop can cause problems for the network at U.C. Berkeley
  if the SETI data server is unresponsive or causes the client to
  repeatedly exit.
  
  It is more appropriate to have a wait time in your loop, for example:
  

  $ while true
        do
  	./setiathome
  	sleep 21600		# give it a few hours to clear up
        done
  

• The same is true if you run the client from a cron job, or other
  timing mechanism. Do not run it on a minute by minute basis, but
  instead, have several hours elapse between restarts of the client.

Version 3.03 Upgrade procedure from v3.0, v2.* or v1.* clients:

• 1. Stop your currently running v2.* client
• 2. Put the new v3.03 binary in place of your old binary
• 3. Start the new client
• The v3.03 client will restart processing of your current work-unit from the beginning.
• Please discard your old binary. It cannot obtain new work units.
• Please note timetable of version transition dates below.

• The xsetiathome X11 client released with the 3.03 version of the client has known problems. Please note the README.xsetiathome file in the .tar delivery. Not all platforms necessarily have an xsetiathome client. Please do not email us about bugs in the xsetiathome client.
• MacOS X server: use a directory on a local file system (file locking over NFS doesn't work).

Notes:

• Please do not run SETI@home on computers for which it is not authorized. (See the License Agreement for other restrictions.)
• Intel versions run on the given processor and higher. For example, i386 version run on 386, 486, and pentium. The binaries have been compiled with a blended optimization to give good performance on all versions of the Intel chipsets. Please do not email SETI@home to request specially optimized binaries.

• For Linux systems on the AMD K6 processor, only the binaries i386-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1 and i386-pc-linux-gnulibc1-static should be used. The binaries i686-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1 and i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1-static will not function on the AMD K6 processor.
• Please do not run SETI@home on computers for which you do not have authorization.

• NEW (2001-01-19) The version 3.04 clients for the platforms mips[34]-sgi-irix6.2 are merely the 3.03 versions of these clients, but with less dependence upon the runtime environment. Therefore these version 3.04 clients will function on older platforms without requiring upgrades of the runtime libraries.
